Songs for Living Faith is a workshop that you will want to attend if you resonate with these thoughts. Whether you lead from the front or from your seat in the pew, this venue will validate and encourage your gifts as a singer, a leader of song, a person of faith who experiences the presence and power of God through singing. The opening presentation will include introduction of participants, a music-laced story of Ray’s beginnings and evolution as a writer and leader of songs for worship, and some singing together as a way of deepening our faith connection with each other. Following coffee we will discuss and practice engaged leadership. Bring your voices and any other portable instruments you play. Let’s find out what is going on in our churches here in Florida. After lunch we will share learning’s from the day, identify practical resources for the days ahead, and plan next steps for staying connected as song animators.
Ray Makeever has been writing and leading biblically based songs for Christian worship and liturgy for 35 years. He began his career as a Lutheran pastor but soon realized that preaching the gospel through song was the most natural way for him to communicate the word of God. He is happiest standing in front of a congregation with his guitar, hearing the collective voices of his brothers and sisters in Christ singing out the words and melodies he has created to express the wonderful ways in which God enters into our lives.
Ray has published four books of songs over the years – “With All Your Heart: Songs and Liturgies of Encouragement and Hope” (1984); “Open the Door: Songs for Liturgy and Liberation” (1988); “Walk Across the Water: Songs for Living Faith” (1992); and “Dancing At the Harvest: Songs for Liturgy and Life” (1997). He has recorded two CDs – “Dancing at the Harvest” (1997) and “Even the Stones Will Cry Out for Justice” (2000).
He recently retired from his 20-year post as Campus Ministry Associate for Worship and Music at Augsburg College in Minneapolis. At present he is music director at Trinity Lutheran Church, a mixed Norwegian/Ethiopian/Eritrean gathering of believers in the heart of a large and vibrant Somali, inner-city neighborhood.
Ray is married to Linda Breitag, and they are parents of Sophia Breitag-Makeever. All three of them will be active in leadership during the workshop, the worship services, and in the concert performance of their band, “Precious Sparkle Kitty!”.
We look forward to a lively, heartfelt, resourceful, fun-filled weekend with you all.
