RAISING ROCK SOLID KIDS
Raising Rock Solid Kids—that title caught my eye both as a pastor
and a parent. Value-Packed Parenting: Raising Rock Solid
Kids in a Pleasure Driven World is the name of a new video series
by Dr. Kevin Leman. Dr. Leman is an internationally known
psychologist, award winning author of 30 books, and parent of
5 children. Some of you are familiar with Leman’s other parenting
series that have been offered here at Our Savior and at
churches nationwide. Also, many of you have been asking for
another series that provides encouragement and support in this
gift and work and challenge that parenting is.
If this is you, join facilitator Kelly Elsebough and others as we
gather for this 7-week series starting January 27th during the
Sunday School hour (9:45 AM Sundays). Kelly Elsebough (a wonderful
mom and faithful woman who along with her husband,
Ed, are truly raising two rock solid kids) has previewed the 7-
week series and thinks it is wonderful. I asked Kelly some
questions about the series. Here are her responses:
What do you like most about Dr. Leman’s series Raising
Rock Solid Kids?
Kelly: Dr. Leman has a passion for kids and families. This is
clearly his mission and calling. Watching him, you catch his
enthusiasm and passion, it is contagious. Through his humor,
teaching, and fresh ideas he makes you feel encouraged as a
parent. I especially appreciate that he helps you avoid the
“you’re going to listen to me just because I’m the parent” approach
and instead helps you focus on the relationship between
you and your child. He gives ideas for opening up new
ways to communicate together.
What ages of children and what sorts of families does
series speak to?
Kelly: Anyone and everyone! All ages. The series is not
applicable to parents with children of any ages, but would
be helpful to grandparents, child care givers, and anyone
a relationship with children or youth.
Who would be interested in a class like this?
Kelly: This series isn’t just for parents who feel they are
trouble spot with their kids, it is for all parents who want encouragement
and support through the trouble spots and/
avoid those kinds of trouble spots.
What will participating in the class involve?
Kelly: Watching the 30 minute DVD of Dr. Leman’s teaching
and participating in the discussion that follows. Highlight
sheets on each week’s topics will be provided.
What are the topics that will be covered?
Kelly: The seven weeks cover the following topics:
- The 10 best gifts you’ll ever give your kids.
- How to listen so kids will talk and how to talk so
kids will listen.
- Discipline isn’t spelled p-u-n-i-s-h-m-e-n-t.
- Ten ways to improve your child’s self-confidence.
- Caution: Anger ahead. Observing the warning signs
before tempers flare.
- Birth order and what you need to know about it.
- Standing up to the new Goliath. Helping kids overcome
the negative influence of the internet, media,
and technology.
Anything else you want to share about the series?
Kelly: Participants will want to bring a pen and notebook because
they will definitely want to be taking notes so they can
take these ideas home with them!
