From the Desk of Pastor Diehl

October 2008

If you look at the church calendar in this newsletter (both the "Our Savior" side and the "Community Happenings" side), you'll see that a lot goes on around Our Savior other than Saturday night or Sunday morning. But as important as all of those things are, worship is still and always will be central to the life of this community of faith.

It is in worship that we all come together with our various hurts, joys, challenges, questions, celebrations, etc. In worship we pray, sing, listen, commune, confess, extend a greeting of peace and are fed. In worship we gather with old, young, male, female, working, retired, married, single, etc. Look around at worship some time and think:

  • What does everyone bring here as we gather in God's presence?
  • What do we need?
  • What do we have to offer?
  • What is God trying to say to us?

There is something terribly profound about taking the time to gather with others to hear a Word bigger than any of us; to touch, and be touched by, God's Eternal presence; to be fed by the Bread of Life Himself; then to be sent back out into our daily lives. It is so easy to get caught up in our own little worlds and begin to think we are the center of the universe. That in fact is at the heart and core of a fallen humanity. But in worship, we hear that Word which tells the Truth about both our condition and God's willingness and ability to re-create us into a new and redeemed, not just fallen, creation. And as we gather together, we remind each other of that reality and that Truth about God and us.

During the month of October, some highlights regarding worship experiences will be a "Blessing of the Animals" on Sunday afternoon, October 5 at 3:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall. The weekend of October 18-19 our worship will be in the form of a healing service, in commemoration of St. Luke, the physician. The weekend of October 25-26 is the Reformation celebration with a special guest appearance and Word from none other than Martin Luther himself! Also on that weekend, we will celebrate the confirmation of this year's confirmation class. What a blessing it is to be a part of special events like that and to be a part of the worshiping Body of Christ.

See You in Church!
