|After taking a “selfie” in worship this past weekend, we asked are “selfies” selfish? I suppose they could be if they make us think more about ourselves and less about others. In our Gospel reading for the weekend, disciples James and John were acting a bit selfish, asking to sit at Jesus’ right and left. The other ten disciples were none too pleased. Jesus, after telling James and John they really didn’t know what they were asking, reminded all the disciples that such selfish thoughts have no place in God’s kingdom work. Then Jesus told them, “Whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all.”
Hearing Jesus’ words leads me to offer profound thanks for the family of Our Savior Lutheran Church, for the many ways in which you serve selflessly and give of yourselves for the sake of others! Thank you for your beautiful response to our gift card collection for those in our state’s panhandle devastated by Hurricane Michael. Thank you for supporting our “Change for the Better” drive in which we are partnering with local Lutheran churches to help build a church in impoverished Haiti. Thank you for enabling our congregation to address significant special needs in the past year, the replacing of both our columbarium and our sanctuary roof. Thank you for your regular support that keeps your ongoing ministries vibrant week in and week out. Thank you most of all for the way you personally engage as you care for, cook for, visit fellow members and neighbors, tending to their needs. Your caring and sharing remind and encourage me to keep my focus on Christ and others.
Always grateful, Pastor Mark
