Unclean Spirt vs. Holy Spirit?
This coming Sunday, it will be the Eagles vs. the Patriots in the Super Bowl. Who will win is anyone’s guess. This past Sunday, in St. Mark’s gospel, we heard about an “unclean spirit” vs. Jesus who embodies the Holy Spirit. Not much of a game, since Jesus dismissed the “unclean spirit” with the simple words, “Be silent!” Of course, battling an “unclean spirit” of any kind is not easy. The battle can exhaust us, beat us up, and even leave us feeling like we have been defeated. But remember, we do not battle alone, and through faith in Jesus Christ comes the promise that victory always awaits us. How did old Martin Luther put it in “A Mighty Fortress is Our God?” “For God himself fights by our side, with weapons of the Spirit?” You see, when it’s an “unclean spirit” vs. the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit wins every time.
I’m pleased to say that confidence in the Holy Spirit is high at Our Savior Lutheran Church. This past Sunday we held an annual meeting between services. We heard reports, celebrated out partnerships with each other and our syndocial and churchwide expressions within the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, affirmed a spending plan for fiscal year 2018, and gave thanks for the time, talent, and treasure that keeps our congregation healthy, active, and a place many are blessed to call home. Thank you for the way you are connected to OSLC! And thank you Holy Spirit for always leading the way!
Blessed Epiphany Season, Pastor Mark
