We’ve memorized John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son so that everyone who believes in him may not perish, but have eternal life.”

Notice it doesn’t say everyone who achieves, or succeeds, or agrees; but everyone who believes. Believes in what? In God’s love that has come down to us in Jesus. “For us and for our salvation, he came down,” we confess in the Nicene Creed. You see, Christianity is a “down religion,” not an “up religion.” We don’t ascend to God by our works, but God descends to us by his grace. How far down does God descend? All the way to the cross where God declares the depth of his love for all the world.

And don’t forget, when God says “the world,” he means the whole world, the “cosmos,” the whole chaotic mess that God has been saving from the beginning of time when his Spirit moved over the waters. Nothing and no one is beyond the depth of his love. That’s why we would do well to also memorize John 3:17 (which punctuates John 3:16): “Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that might be saved through him.”

In a world that too often rushes to judgement and is quick to condemn, this is good news indeed. God’s love is for all! Salvation is a gift! Thanks be to God!

Blessings, Pastor Mark
