|At the baptism of Jesus, God gives holiness away. Here’s the picture. Jesus wades into the waters of the Jordan to be baptized by John. John declares himself unworthy, but Jesus invites John into the holy work of God’s affirmation; and when John consents and water is poured, the heavens open as the Holy Spirit descends and the Holy Father’s voice is heard.
Through our baptism into Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, God continues to give holiness away. Through water and word, we have been accepted and welcomed as beloved children of God. The heavens opened for us too, and to us the Spirit has been sent. Like John, we know deep within that we are unworthy. But it doesn’t matter because Christ himself invites us to join in his holy work of sharing God’s affirming love.
How is God calling you to give holiness away this week? Remember, God doesn’t call the qualified as much as he qualifies the called. And through the waters of baptism, he calls us all to join him in the divine work of giving holiness away.
Please join us for our annual congregational meeting on January 29th at 9:45 in the Sanctuary and for the MLK Parade on Monday, January 16th – contact the church office for more information.
